Most business printers can accept a broad range of paper sizes within their sheet-fed paper trays. This flexibility lets you use one printer to handle everything from standard letter- and legal-size documents down to smaller pieces of paper like four-by-six photographic paper or even three-by-five cards. However, using differing sizes of paper can require you to reconfigure your printer.

Letter-Size Paper

Most printers sold for business use support standard 8.5 inch wide by 11 inch tall letter-size paper by default. At the same time, they can also feed the similar European specification A4 sheet, which measures approximately 8.25 inches wide by 11.75 inches tall. They are typically designed to feed the paper on its narrowest end and, as such, have a print path that is approximately 8.5 inches wide. Many printers also have a paper tray long enough to accommodate a 14-inch long sheet of legal paper.

Many printers also have a special feed slot for envelopes and single sheets of small paper. They are typically set up to feed the media on its narrowest side and are optimized for standard envelopes sizes, such as A10. A10 envelopes are designed to hold folded letter- or legal-size sheets and, as such, measure six inches tall and 9.5 inches long.

Smaller Sizes

Most printers have at least one paper tray or drawer that can be configured to hold just about any size of paper down to a certain minimum. In many cases, you will have to use the printer's drop-down front tray rather than the main paper drawer, but in exchange for this inconvenience, you can print on sheets as small as four-by-five or even 3.5-by-five in some printers.

Wide Carriage Printers

Manufacturers also make printers with wider paper paths that can accommodate larger sheets of paper. Tabloid-size printers that can handle an 11-by-17 inch sheets are readily available at relatively reasonable prices. The key drawback to these printers is their size - since they can handle a sheet of paper that is twice as large, they must also be physically larger. Extremely wide carriage printers that can accommodate 24- or 36-inch wide papers are also available, although they are typically sold for design shops and other specialized applications.
